| | | An Activity for Preschoolers | | This project can be used as an introduction to a classic piece of art while learning how to recreate it. | | | Goals: | To introduce art and encourage the exploration of mood through painting tools.
| | | Before You Start: | You will need shaving cream, Colorations® Liquid Watercolor, a comb for making swirls, rubber stamps (with stars and swirl shapes) and white and black paper. Also, make sure to have a copy or picture of Vincent Van Gogh's original The Starry Night to show students.
| | | Let's Begin: | 1. Make swirls in the “Van Gogh style” using a comb to marbleize the combination of shaving cream and Colorations® Liquid Watercolor on a piece of paper. Allow the paper to dry.
2. Have the students create a black silhouette of a landscape out of black construction paper (for younger students, you may want to have shapes precut). Have them glue the landscape pieces along the bottom of the marbleized paper.
3. Use rubber stamps and acrylic paint to add stars and more swirls to the sky.
| | | Furthermore: | | Have children compare their final “Van Gogh-esque” portrait to the real thing and ask them to point out the differences. This is a huge hit with my second graders! | |
