  • Combine an award-winning book with a cool hands-on science activity
  • Become a UV detective with these UV-sensitive beads
  • They start out white, but take them outside to see their true colors!
  • Great demonstration to show the power of the sun and that UV is still in the air even when it’s cloudy
  • Connect literature with science as students string the color-changing beads into a bracelet or necklace

Read The Rainbow Fish with your class, then connect literature with science as students string the color-changing beads into a bracelet or necklace. Your young scientists will learn about ultraviolet light and sun safety as they try to make the beads change color or to prevent them from turning color. The kit includes beads and cord, simple instructions, and an explanation of the science behind the activity.

How Does It Work?

The beads change from plain white to a rainbow of colors in sunlight. The “solar secret” is a pigment in the plastic that is sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) light. In simplest terms, UV energy bends molecular bonds in the pigment to change the way wavelengths of color are absorbed and reflected by it. Instead of reflecting all colors (white), the pigment now reflects a specific color wavelength (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple). With no UV energy present, the pigment bends back to its original shape and the white color “returns.”
